How great the struggle, unrelenting,
\nOf man to live in life anew,
\nSometimes the soul is glad consenting,
\nYet all too often it will not do.<\/p>\n
The things we would we do not,
\nThough sure we know for best
\nThat He intends them for us
\nSo we might be full blessed.<\/p>\n
Instead the things we would not
\nPrevail against our mind,
\nAnd soon we’re cast full downward
\nBy sin it’s pleasures blind.<\/p>\n
Then follows the regret,
\nWe’ve felt it many times,
\nIt passes soon and we forget
\nThe pain of many crimes.<\/p>\n
Pain for which Christ Jesus died,
\nHis love to us is fully known,
\nGod’s grace and mercy like a tide,
\nWhy then to sin are we so prone?<\/p>\n
Oh wretched man I am,
\nHow will I then be free?
\nThanks be to God for Christ raised up,
\nLife new can surely be.<\/p>\n
Whilst prone to doubt and question
\nIf this is all I need,
\nMay God help me by faith to hold,
\nWith Spirit help proceed.<\/p>\n
By mercies of the living God,
\nBy future looking eye,
\nTo serve today Him only,
